February 2017 Field Trip

Park Naturalist, Sid Taylor led us on an interpretive walk and helped us identify the winter native plants and ecosystems in this portion of the forest.

January 2017 Field Trip

This was a field trip to see Amendment One money in action led by Eric Hoyer, Forester/Arborist with Natural Resource Planning Services, Inc. Eric led us on a field trip at Silver Springs. We looked at timber thinning of planted loblolly pine as the first step in converting to a natural loblolly stand, we saw the results of invasive species control, and we looked at some natural communities found within the park.

 

2016 Plant Sale

In March, CNPS had our first native plant sale - all done with pre-orders.

Memorial Butterfly Garden - Church House Hammock

Garden was planted in fall 2014 in honor of Gary Maidhoff, former President of the Citrus Chapter. The location of the garden is across the street from the Crystal River Mall on Highway 19 in Crystal River.

March 2016 Field Trip

Located in Yankeetown, FL, The Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve is a 413 acre parcel of undeveloped wetlands located on Florida’s Nature Coast. It consists of mixed hardwood, pine, and cabbage palm forest, tidal marshes, and several salt ponds. The Preserve has a 30 foot observation tower, salt pond boardwalk, Gulf accessible canoe/kayak dock, and a 4500 square foot education center.

September 2016 Volunteer Day at Crystal River Preserve State Park

CNPS Kids Program 2016

The Coastal Region Library in Crystal River held a plant program for kids taught by Ellen Allen Americorps Volunteer at the Crystal River Preserve State Park.

October 2016 Field Trip at Crystal River Preserve State Park

Trip into the Crystal River Preserve State Park with biologist Keith Morin. We rode a tram about 3-4 miles into the preserve to an area that had been burned in May.

Crystal River Refuge Day 2016

Crystal River NWR is the only refuge created specifically for the protection of the endangered Florida Manatee.

November 2016 Chapter Meeting

“Monarchs and Milkweed” program presented by Scott Davis from the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, our annual election of officers, a selection of gifts to honor our 2016 volunteers, a “Native Plant of the Month” presentation, a drawing from our selection of native plants and “Barbara’s Bits”.
